Samsung demonstrates 5G network slicing on commercial networks

South Korea's electronic giant Samsung Electronics Co. said on Friday that it has successfully verified its network slicing technology in a 5G standalone commercial network environment jointly with Japanese mobile telecom operator KDDI.

5G network slicing refers to a network architecture that divides a physical mobile communications network into multiple independent virtual networks to provide customized communications services for different purposes, such as ultra-low latency and ultra-high speed.

Earlier in 2020, the Korean company succeeded in demonstrating 5G network slicing technology for the first time in the world at KDDI Research.

Samsung tested smartphones currently sold in Japan with 5G standalone base stations and core equipment supplied by itself on a 5G commercial network in downtown Tokyo for three months from September last year.

"Once the technology is commercialized, it will be possible to simultaneously provide multiple services that require different technical features in a single network, contributing to the further spread of 5G services," said a Samsung Electronics official.
