LG Display Co., a major South Korean display panel maker, has unveiled a next-generation OLED TV panel that enables brighter and more vivid picture quality.
During the all-digital Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2021, which opened on Monday for a four-day run, LG took the wraps off a 77-inch OLED TV display with newly developed organic material.
LG said its upgraded OLED panel is 20% brighter by adding another luminous layer, providing more vivid color and picture quality. The latest panel will be applied to high-end TV models this year, it said.
OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, is highlighted by self-illuminating pixels that do not require a separate light source, allowing manufacturers to produce lightweight, thin and flexible display products. LG Display has been producing OLED TV panels since 2013.
CSO TECHNOLOGY THAT MAKES SOUND WITHOUT SPEAKERS
At its virtual CES 2021 exhibition hall located in Seoul, LG Display also showcased its cinematic sound OLED (CSO) technology, which uses OLED modules to vibrate the panel and play sound without speakers. LG’s bendable and transparent screens are also on display during the exhibition.

CES, the world’s largest tech expo, is being held online only due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
LG Display, the world's top manufacturer of large-size OLED panels, said in a statement that it plans to diversify the size of its panels to meet various consumer needs.
In addition to existing 88-, 77-, 65-, 55- and 48-inch OLED panels, the company said it will mass-produce 83- and 42-inch OLED displays from this year.
“This year will mark the tipping point for OLED panels, meaning explosive demand growth for such screens,” said Yoon Soo-young, LG Display’s chief technology officer.
The company said it plans to increase its OLED TV panel shipments to as many as 8 million units this year from 4.5 million units in 2020.
