Samsung Electronics Co.’s premium laptop PC series Galaxy Book 3 is a global hit since its release last month

Its reception has grown so high that it has led to the term "Roh Tae-book," a combination of the name of Roh Tae-moon, president and head of the company's MX (Mobile Experience) Business who led the line's launch, and the word "notebook."

“Cumulative global sales of the Galaxy Book 3 series is 2.5 times higher than that of its predecessor," said Shim Hwang-yoon, vice president and head of the division's New Computing Hardware R&D Group 2, at a news conference on Thursday. “The market's response is better than ever.”

He cited the series' top model Ultra, which debuted this year, as a key factor behind such success. Receiving a lot of product R&D including eight redesigns of the main board, the Ultra is the most expensive in the lineup but has received rave reviews for its excellent performance and light weight of 1.8 kg.

Shim said development of a laptop worthy of the name "Ultra" with high performance and portability was not easy.

"To make high-end laptops, we had to maintain product thickness and weight at certain levels," he said. "From designing the main board and cooling system to completing the optimal layout between hardware products, we raised portability."

R&D focus also went to better user convenience like the same experience of using a smartphone by installing in the laptops the Dynamic AMOLED 2X display used in Galaxy smartphones. Samsung Electronics through a strategic collaboration with Microsoft and Nvidia boosted connectivity among Galaxy mobile devices.

The industry is wondering if the hit laptop series can fuel a turnaround for the company's notebook PCs. Samsung Electronics is South Korea's top maker of the item but its share of the global market is in single digits.
