LG Elec gets vehicle cyber security certification from German agency

LG Electronics Inc., a leading South Korean home appliance maker, said on Monday that it has obtained ISO/SAE 21434 certification for its vehicle components from TUV Rheinland, a Germany-based international testing organization.

This certification ensures that LG's automotive cyber security management system meets the highest standards for digital security, which is crucial for compliance with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s regulation No. 155, UN R155.

By obtaining the certification, LG Electronics will be able to supply infotainment systems and telematics components with high cyber security standards to car makers that sell vehicles in UNECE member countries.

As advanced automotive technologies such as autonomous driving increasingly rely on various software and communication networks, there has been a growing demand from the public for enhanced security measures to prevent hacking incidents that could exploit potential vulnerabilities.

The UNECE adopted a vehicle cyber security regulation in Jun. 2020, requiring all vehicles under development to obtain a cyber security management system certification before being released in its member countries. The regulation aims to prevent hacking incidents by ensuring security throughout the entire process from design, development, and production to post-management.

“We plan to proactively respond to cyber security regulations required not only in Europe but also in North America and Asia,” said an official of LG Electronics.
