Samsung Galaxy tops list of South Korea's 100 brands

Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy smartphones retained the first place in South Korea’s top-100 brand list for 12 consecutive years, Brandstock, a South Korean brand consulting firm, announced on Sunday.

The Galaxy smartphone received 937.6 out of 1,000 total scores in the 2022 Brandstock Top Index (BSTI), winning the number one spot.

Despite slowing demand, Samsung Electronics’ share in the global smartphone market in the third quarter of this year rose 1.4 percentage points from a year earlier to 21.8%.

Samsung Electronics' new Galaxy phone introduced this year received favorable reviews overseas, with the flagship model Galaxy S22 Ultra selected as Best Inventions of 2022 by the US weekly magazine Time.

The value of air and travel brands soared on expectations of resuming overseas travel.

Korean Air, the nation’s top flag carrier, jumped 11 notches to 11th place and Hana Tour rebounded to 32nd place this year from 40th place last year.

On the other hand, online shopping brands that grew rapidly during the COVID-19 period, saw their brand value step back as market competition intensified.

Coupang fell to 20th place this year from 11th last year. Gmarket (18th to 28th), Auction (24th to 41st), 11th Street (47th to 72nd), and SSG Dotcom (71st to 86th) also showed steep declines.

IT-related brands were also generally sluggish.  Naver slipped by on notch from third place to fourth and Google from ninth place to 10th, over the cited period.
