A smartphone cover glass that does not break even when dropped from a height of 1 meter onto a concrete floor has been newly developed. Corning Inc., a US materials company that supplies smartphone cover glass to Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple, introduced a new product with reinforced durability.
Jeom-Sik Kim, President of Corning Gorilla Glass Korea, held an online press conference on Thursday and unveiled "Gorilla Glass Victus 2," which has maximized the property to prevent damage when dropped on concrete. He said, “We made glass that can withstand dropping a smartphone from waist height on a surface rougher than asphalt.”
Corning said in its own test that Gorilla Glass Victus 2 could withstand impact when dropped from a height of 1 meter onto a concrete surface.
He insisted, "Most of the reinforced aluminosilicate glass offered by competitors was broken when it was dropped from a height of 0.5 meter." Corning also released a demo video of the test.
President Kim added, "Compared to four years ago, the weight of smartphones has increased by 15% and the screen size by 10%, so there is a growing demand for cover glass that is thinner and lighter, yet has stronger durability and drop retention performance."
According to Corning, 84% of consumers in the three major smartphone markets, China, India, and the US, cited durability as the most important factor in making a purchase decision.
It was reported that the cover glass is highly likely to be installed in the "Samsung Galaxy S23" that Samsung Electronics will release early next year. “Several companies are evaluating Gorilla Glass Victus 2 as an option,” said President Kim. “It will be installed in new products within a few months.”
