Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) announced on Monday that it has signed a letter of intent (LOI) with the US-based Centrus Energy Corp. to enhance the nuclear fuel supply chain.
KHNP expects that this LOI can stabilize the enriched uranium supply chain and diversify the suppliers.
Centrus has obtained approval from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to produce high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) used in next-generation reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs).
"Through the LOI, we will initiate more detailed discussions on a stable supply of nuclear fuel," CEO of KHNP Whang Joo-ho said.
