HD Hyundai Infracore to develop hydrogen gas turbine engine

HD Hyundai Infracore Co., a construction equipment unit of South Korea’s HD Hyundai Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea East-West Power to develop and commercialize hydrogen gas turbine engine

The partnership will use HD Hyundai Infracore’s expertise to build a 1MW-class hydrogen gas turbine engine system, integrating five 200kW, 11-liter emission hydrogen gas turbine engine to ensure constant power generation.

Korea East-West Power will support demonstrations of these engines using the hydrogen supply facilities and power grid infrastructure of the Ulsan Power Plant.

Hydrogen gas turbine engine is a promising technology in the fight against climate change, utilizing 100% hydrogen as a combustion fuel. This technology can be built using existing diesel engine technology and facilities, allowing cost savings and speeding up the path to commercialization.

The two companies have set ambitious targets for their joint venture, aiming to have a prototype hydrogen gas turbine engine by the end of 2024 and expand their product line.

The partnership also intends to enter the hydrogen power generation market, focusing on the Clean Hydrogen Energy Portfolio Standards (CHPS) to be implemented starting in 2024.
