South Korea's heavy industry company Doosan Enerbility Co. on Thursday said it discussed on Tuesday cooperation in areas like hydrogen production using small modular reactors (SMR) with top executives of X-energy Reactor Company LLC, an American SMR developer.

Doosan has boosted its presence on the SMR market by also signing a memorandum of understanding with NuScale Power Corp. of the US on expansion in the sector.

Based on this cooperation, Doosan's goal is to emerge as a global SMR foundry in the US. Supported by the world's top output capacity for SMR equipment, it will manufacture in the US facilities developed and designed by American companies.

"Doosan Enerbility qualifies as an SMR foundry because of its high understanding of nuclear design, differentiated manufacturing capacity and solid supply chains," a company source said.

Doosan began cooperation with X-energy in 2021 by participating in SMR production design for high-temperature gas promoted by its American partner. In January, Doosan bought a stake in X-energy and signed a deal to supply core equipment and materials to boost cooperation.

"We will establish ourselves as a leading SMR foundry on the global market by cooperating with SMR developers from various angles," Doosan Enerbility CEO Park Gee-won said.
