CJ Logistics aims to achieve carbon neutrality goal by 2050

South Korea's parcel delivery company CJ Logistics said on Friday that it will achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 for a more sustainable future in logistics.

For the first time in the nation's logistics industry, the company published a Climate Change Response Report that contains its goals and core strategies to respond to climate change.

In the report, CJ Logistics declared net zero to realize carbon neutrality by 2050 and included a mid- to long-term ESG strategy to accomplish this.

First, the company decided to reduce 37% of greenhouse gas it emitted in 2021 by 2030.

As a result of its own analysis of business areas where greenhouse gases are mostly emitted, carbon emissions from means of transportation such as truck fleets and electricity usage from facilities such as distribution centers accounted for the largest share at about 52% and 48%, respectively, owing to the nature of the delivery business.

The company plans to reduce carbon emissions from transportation by converting to eco-friendly vehicles as much as possible and improving transportation efficiency. To this end, all vehicles will be gradually converted to eco-friendly vehicles such as electric and hydrogen cars.

To improve fuel efficiency, an optimal route transportation system will be established based on state-of-the-art technology, engineering, systems, and solutions (TES) logistics technology. Renewable energy sources such as solar power plants will be introduced to the logistics centers while existing buildings will make use of building energy efficiency solutions.

"As a leading global integrated logistics company, we will take part in an international effort to relieve the problem while turning it into a business opportunity based on innovative logistics technology," said Kim Hee-jun, manager in charge of ESG at CJ Logistics.
