DB HiTek develops automotive power semiconductor tech

The South Korean foundry player aims to expand business into motor driver chips specialized for industrial use with new technology

DB HiTek Co., South Korea’s major foundry chipmaker, developed the automotive power semiconductor process technology to meet the increasing demand in the sector worldwide amid the rapid growth in the global electric vehicle and self-driving car market.

DB Hitek said on Thursday it has secured a 0.13-micrometer BCDMOS 120V process platform, mainly used for automotive and industrial power semiconductors. BCDMOS is a complex circuit composed of Bipolar, complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and laterally-diffused metal-oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) devices.

The achievement allowed DB Hitek to extend its power semiconductor lineups as it already developed 5-40V products for mobile devices and home appliances, as well as 40-60V models for displays.

“Once we complete the development of 900V power semiconductor process, which is currently in progress, we will expand our business into motor driver chips specialized for industrial use,” said a DB Hitek official.

The global power semiconductor market is forecast to grow by 6% a year on average to $39.6 billion by 2026 from an estimate of $31.9 billion this year, according to a tech industry research company Omdia.
