Openedges develops interface supporting Samsung's 5nm process

Openedges Technology, South Korean semiconductor design intellectual property (IP) platform, announced on Tuesday its plans to produce physical layer (PHY) IP supporting the 5-nanometer (nm) process at Samsung Electronics Co.'s Foundry Division. PHY serves as the crucial interface facilitating communication between system semiconductors and memory semiconductors.

In the current landscape, semiconductor chips are commonly mass-produced as system-on-chips (SoCs), combining central processing units (CPUs) with memory chips such as DRAM.

Openedges' PHY IP will play a vital role in enabling efficient data exchange between system semiconductors manufactured through Samsung Electronics' 5nm foundry process and LPDDR5X DRAMs, achieving an impressive maximum speed of 8,533 Mbps.

Notably, this marks the second application of Openedges' PHY IP within Samsung Electronics' foundry division, following its utilization in the 14nm process.

"Openedges continues to foster a fruitful partnership with our division," Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Foundry Division Shin Jong-shin said.

He further expressed expectations for enhanced cooperation with Openedges to drive mutual growth within the domestic system semiconductor market.

Lee Seong Hyun CEO of Openedges, asserted his company's commitment to securing trust and a strong position in the global market. He emphasized the significance of continued technological collaboration with world-class semiconductor companies to solidify Openedges' presence in the industry.
