S.Korea leads liquid hydrogen fuel tank technology standards

South Korea's draft proposal on aviation liquid hydrogen fuel tanks was adopted as an international standard at the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Hydrogen Technology Committee (TC 197) meeting held in Sydney, Australia, from December 5 to 9, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, national standards and technical evaluation agency of Ministry of Trade Industry and Energy (MOTIE), said on Monday.

The Korean standard draft, proposed by Dr. Choi Yong-nam of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), sets the manufacturing requirements, performance, and test methods of a liquid hydrogen fuel tank foradvanced air mobility (AAM), which requires ultra-lightening technology.
An expert work group (WG) will be formed to go through the ISO international standardization process.

In addition, Dr. Kang Seung-kyu of Korea Gas Safety Corporation decided to push for international standardization of hydrogen charging methods for ships, which deals with how to safely charge high-pressure hydrogen to ships at sea.

Dr. Kim Woon-kyung of Integrity Diagnostics Korea (IDK), a company specializing in diagnostic measurement, also opted to work out a standard formula to check the condition of hydrogen pressure tanks through sound emission without stopping the operations of hydrogen filling stations.

"The government will provide support to help Korea to lead international standardization in the global hydrogen industry based on the technology and experience accumulated," Lee Sang-hoon, head of the National Institute of Technology said.
