Doosan Enerbility Co. announced Sunday it has signed an initial memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy S.A. (SGRE) in Copenhagen, Denmark on Sunday for cooperation in offshore wind power business.

Doosan Enerbility, formerly known as Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., is an affiliate of the South Korean conglomerate Doosan Group.

The two companies will explore business opportunities in South Korea’s offshore wind power generation market.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy S.A. is an affiliate of Germany's Siemens Energy AG.

The Spanish-German wind engineering firm is based in Zamudio, Biscay, Spain. Founded in 2017, the company manufactures wind turbines and provides onshore and offshore wind services, and boasts the No.1 position in the global wind power market.

The two sides will collaborate in developing and manufacturing large-sized wind power generating systems, their maintenance, and repair services.

Offshore wind power is widely considered the most optimal carbon-free energy source for the Korean peninsula, which has a limited amount of sunshine and land mass. Off-shore wind power also has higher energy output than its onshore counterpart.

Doosan Enerbility is the largest provider of offshore wind power in South Korea.

Since the beginning of its wind power business in 2005, Doosan is still the country’s only manufacturer to have a supply record in the domestic offshore wind power market, including Tamra Offshore Wind Power (30MW) and Southwest Offshore Wind Power Phase 1 (60MW).

Last year, it also signed a supply agreement with Jeju Island-based Hallim Offshore Wind Power Generation Project (100MW). The company is tasked with establishing 18 generators by 2024 and maintaining them for the next two decades.

The company is poised to commercialize an 8MW offshore wind turbine optimized for wind conditions on the peninsula. It is also building a new plant to mass-produce the new wind turbine.

The global offshore wind installation is set to grow to 228GW by 2030, and 1000GW by 2050.

“We will raise our competitiveness in the wind power business by incorporating Siemens Gamesa’s global know-how into our operations,” the head of the power service division at Doosan Enerbility said.
