LG Energy Solution Ltd. and Pohang-based Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (RIST) announced Wednesday they will embark on joint research for smart factory technology.

POSCO founded RIST in 1987 to conduct research on rechargeable batteries, hydrogen and renewable energy, as well as smart factory technology.

LG Energy Solution, under the LG Corp. umbrella, is South Korea’s top battery manufacturer.

The conglomerate and the think tank will work together to develop “digital twin” technology that enables visual representation of a real-time physical counterpart to predict possible problems through simulation. LG’s battery-making arm will also adopt a number of RIST’s smart factory technology such as three-dimensional modeling using LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging.)

Based on the latest agreement, LG Energy Solution plans to incorporate technology developed by RIST onto its global production line.
