LG Innotek wins top US invention award

South Korea’s LG Innotek announced on Monday that its ultra-thin magnetic components, Nexlim, has won a bronze award in the "Commercial Technology" category at the prestigious Edison Awards 2023 held in the US. The award-winning component is considered essential for the production of ultra-slim and high-definition televisions.

The Edison Awards, established in 1987 to honor the innovative spirit of inventor Thomas Edison, are widely recognized as the "Oscars of Innovation." Over 3,000 judges, consisting of business executives and scholars from various industries, conducted a rigorous evaluation over seven months, selecting winners in 16 different categories.

Nexlim, the world's thinnest magnetic components, plays a crucial role in minimizing power loss and increasing the energy efficiency of electronic products and electric vehicles. Installed in power modules for TVs and power/charging devices for cars, it changes the voltage and eliminates unnecessary signals generated by current fluctuations.

Since 2017, LG Innotek has been investing in and developing ultra-slim magnetic components, which is a growing trend in the electronics industry. In 2020, the company commercialized the 9.9 mm thick Nexlim magnetic component and successfully slimmed down its thickness to 7 mm last year.

LG Innotek has independently developed ferrite magnetic material (X-2), which reduces energy loss by up to 40% compared to conventional magnetic materials and increases power density by three times. The company applied this material to Nexlim.

"We will continue to invest in the development of future innovative materials and lead the creation of differentiated customer value," said Kang Min-seok, CTO and vice president of LG Innotek.
