Hyundai Motor Co.'s premium brand Genesis announced on Friday that its G80 and Electrified G80 got the highest rating "Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+)" from the collision evaluation by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US.
In February of this year, Genesis had already secured the TSP+ rating for G90. In August, GV60, GV70, and Electrified GV70 have received a same rating.
The IIHS, a non-profit organization founded in 1959, conducts annual evaluations on the collision stability and prevention performance of vehicles released in the US market, sharing the results publicly.
Vehicles that exemplify outstanding safety standards are granted the TSP+ rating. In contrast, those with good safety performance receive the TSP rating.
The standards for these ratings were notably heightened this year, particularly for side, pedestrian, and crash headlamp prevention.
For the side crash evaluations, the weight of the crash object and the speed of the impact have increased (from 1,497kg to 1,896kg in weight and from about 49.8 km/h to 59.5km/h in speed, marking an 82% increase in impact energy).
In addition to the evaluation process, this year was a nighttime test for pedestrian crash prevention. Furthermore, both TSP and TSP+ headlamp evaluations now require a minimum rating of "acceptable" across all vehicle trims.
To clinch the TSP+ rating, vehicles, including the G80 and Electrified G80, must achieve the "good" rating in four key crash safety categories: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side crash.
Additionally, they need to score "advanced" or higher in daytime and nighttime front collision prevention tests (for both vehicles and pedestrians). The headlamp evaluations across all vehicle trims must be rated "acceptable" or higher.
