Hyundai, Kia unveil automatic cleaning method for camera sensors

Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. on Wednesday announced their development of rotator cam technology using a small wiper and rotation of the cover glass that protects a camera to remove external contamination.

The technology is among several for sensor cleaning under development by both carmakers. Rotation of the cover glass covering the camera lens effectively removes dust, mud and even water droplets without blocking the sensor's field of view.

First, when artificial intelligence for image analysis detects contamination, the device supplying washer fluid automatically runs to rotate the cover glass. This motion causes the small wiper to filter out contaminants and enable clear video transmission.

In addition, the rotator cam is designed with an integrated wiper blade and washer nozzle for excellent contamination removal. It prevents washer fluid from scattering to the outside and optimizes fluid use.

Commercial application of the technology will result in savings for Hyundai Motor and Kia since the nozzle parts-based cleaning technology relies on imports. It will also contribute to securing safety in self-driving mobility by supporting sensor advancement technology required for fully autonomous driving of Level 4 or higher.

Both companies have applied for a patent for the rotator cam technology and will decide on mass production after conducting durability and performance tests.
