Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) has submitted a final bid to the Czech Republic’s state-run Elektrarna Dukovany II (EDU II) to construct a nuclear power unit, the South Korean energy supplier said on Tuesday.
The other bidders for the construction project are Électricité de France S.A. (EDF), France’s state-owned electricity provider, and US-based Westinghouse Electric Corp.
EDU II is a subsidiary of CEZ, a leading energy group in the Czech Republic.
The subsidiary plans to start building a 1,200-megawatt hour (MWh) unit at its existing nuclear power plant in Dukovany, in southeastern Czech Republic, in 2029 and begin commercial operations in 2036.
EDU II launched the tender for Korea, the US and France in March last year. The three final bidders submitted the initial bids in November of the same year.
KHNP has teamed up with Korea Electric Power Corporation Engineering & Construction Company (KEPCO E&C), KEPCO Plant Service & Engineering Co. (KEPCO KPS), KEPCO Nuclear Fuel, Doosan Enerbility Co. and Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co.
The Korean team has fully reflected the Czech company’s requests in the bidding documents to win the final round, KHNP said.
"The Czech firm plans to pick a preferred bidder by the first half of next year and sign a contract by the end of the same year. We will make our best efforts to be selected as the power plant unit builder," said KHNP Chief Executive Whang Joo-ho.
