YouTube was the most popular app among South Korean smartphone users, a study found, logging the most hours on the video streaming platform worldwide in August.
The study tracked the time 51.2 million South Korean smartphone users spent on mobile apps. It found they watched YouTube for a total of 117.4 billion minutes last month, according to app analytics firm Wiseapp·Retail·Good.
That marked the longest time YouTube users spent on the platform in the world in August, according to industry officials.
Those in their 20s topped the ranking of YouTube users by total time spent. They spent 27.5 billion minutes on the platform, the longest time among all age groups.
Those under 20 watched YouTube for 15.6 billion minutes in August, followed by those in their 30s and 40s who spent 21.6 billion minutes and 21.4 billion minutes on the platform, respectively.
In August, those in their 50s and 60s viewed YouTube videos for 17.4 billion minutes and 13.8 billion minutes, respectively.
INSTAGRAM, KAKAOTALK
Instagram came second as the most popular smartphone app for teenagers and twentysomethings. They used the video-sharing app on smartphones for 6.1 billion minutes and 7.5 billion minutes in August, respectively.
For the over 30s, mobile messenger KakaoTalk ranked second as their most used app. South Korean smartphone users across all age groups spent a total of 32.7 billion minutes chatting on KakaoTalk last month.
South Korea's largest online platform Naver was the third most popular app for those over 30.
