LG Uplus completes second hyperscale data center

South Korea’s telecommunications company LG Uplus Corp. on Thursday announced the completion of a hyperscale data center – its second -- with over 200,000 servers in the southern Seoul suburb of Anyang, Gyeonggi Province.

Its Pyeongchon 2 Center has a combined floor area of 40,450 square meters with three under- and nine above-ground floors, with usable space equivalent to that of six soccer fields.  Operations will be launched in February.

LG Uplus now has two large data centers for corporate clients pursuing cloud transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) adoption.

The new facility boasts cooling energy efficiency double that of its predecessors by using external air to cool facilities when the outside mercury falls under 24 degrees Celsius.

A fan installed on a raised floor quickly brings in cold air. To slow the drop in indoor temperature, floor height was set at around seven meters and wall insulation was improved.

Using eco-friendly energy, the center has separate office and computer buildings to enable cooling and heating through geothermal energy. It also features blocks allowing rainwater to easily pass through and facilities for solar power and fuel cells.

LG Uplus expects annual energy savings of 121 gigawatt hours and reduction of 55,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

“The digital transformation movement and use of hyperscale AI are fueling higher demand for internet data centers (IDC),” LG Uplus CEO Hwang Hyeon-sik said. “We will lead eco-friendly trends through R&D to conserve energy while building high-quality IDCs.”
