Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea’s tech behemoth, agreed to supply 5G telecommunication equipment to US media giant Comcast Corp.

Samsung said on Thursday Comcast plans to install facilities including mid- and low-band base stations with equipment produced by the South Korean company as the US’ top cable service operator plans to launch high-quality 5G commercial services such as video streaming and online games next year. Samsung did not disclose the value of the deal.

“US cable service providers have started buying 5G equipment,” said a Samsung official. “The deal is expected to become a catalyst to raise our profile in the market.”

Samsung Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee aimed to expand its presence in the global 5G equipment market as he chose the sector as one of the company’s future growth engines.

Samsung has already won similar deals at home and overseas markets such as the US, Japan, India and Canada as Lee met chief executives of major telecommunication service providers such as Verizon Communications Inc. and NTT Docomo Inc.

“We will present a new future blueprint resulting from the development of mobile communication technology and strive to realize the vision of the next-generation communication,” said Jeon Kyung-hoon, head of Samsung’s network business division.
