HMM gets Platinum ESG rating from EcoVadis

HMM Co., South Korea’s flagship sea carrier, announced on Tuesday that it achieved the Platinum rating from EcoVadis, a global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) rating agency based in France, marking a first for the South Korean shipping industry. -

EcoVadis evaluates companies on four criteria: environment, labor/human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.

The ratings range from Platinum (top 1%), Gold (top 5%), Silver (top 15%), to Bronze (top 35%).

Notably, the rating system was revised this year to include stricter criteria.

After achieving a Silver rating in 2021 and Gold ratings for 2022 and 2023, HMM has now within just three years, it has reached the highest rank.

Compared to the previous year, HMM has maintained or improved its scores in all areas, especially high scores in sustainable procurement and its traditionally strong environmental performance.

The company's efforts to provide eco-friendly services, evaluations, audits, and preliminary risk analysis.

To date, the only other global container shipping companies have received the Platinum rating are Maersk (ranked second in fleet size in 2023) and CMA-CGM (ranked third in fleet size in 2024).
