Hyundai Heavy Industries Power Systems Co. (HPS) will join hands with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. (KSOE) and CE-TEK Ltd. to develop onboard carbon capture systems (OCCS) for liquefied natural gas-powered (LNG) ships by the first half of 2025, the company announced on Thursday.
The boiler and clean technology affiliate of Korea’s shipbuilding giant HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Group will be in charge of developing carbon-capturing systems while CE-TEK, a research company in carbon capture technology supported by Korea's SK E&S, will develop a solvent used to capture CO2 from exhaust gases.
KSOE will optimize the carbon-capturing system with its proprietary heat and fuel gas handling technologies for vessel operations.
The newly developed system will be installed mainly in LNG-fueled ships to reduce carbon emissions.
The new system is considered a promising decarbonization technology amid tightening greenhouse gas reduction regulations by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
According to the new IMO rules, the maritime industry must reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 from 2008 levels, 80% by 2040 and full decarbonization by 2050.
Founded in 1978, HPS supplied industrial boilers to power plants, chemical plants and oil refiners at home and abroad.
Since it became a subsidiary of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2018, it has diversified its business portfolio to develop eco-friendly marine technologies such as desulfurization and desulfurization environmental facilities, as well as scrubbers.
