Samsung Heavy wins .45 bn order for 15 LNG carriers

South Korea’s shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co. announced on Wednesday that it has won a $3.45 billion order for 15 units of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers from a Middle Eastern shipowner.

The company did not disclose the name of the shipowner.

This deal surpasses the company's previous record of $3 billion for 16 methanol-powered container ships signed last year.

Samsung Heavy Industries will build the 174,000 cubic meter LNG carriers. The LNG carriers will be delivered by October 2028.

With this contract, the company achieved half of its orders last year by securing a total of 17 vessels worth $3.7 billion.

However, the LNG carriers ordered by Samsung Heavy Industries are priced below market value.

According to the disclosure, the unit price per LNG carrier is $230 million, which is lower than the current global LNG carrier price of $265 million (based on 174,000 cubic meters linear)
