Samsung Heavy Industries has succeeded in developing a liquefied hydrogen fuel cell system for use in marine propulsion. 

The electric power is made of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) to be used as the energy source for a ship's propulsion.

Samsung announced on Wednesday that it has acquired an Approval In Principle (AIP) from DNV, an internationally-accredited registrar and classification society headquartered in Hovik, Norway.

Korean companies Bumhan Fuel Cell, Jungwoo ENE and S&SYS took part in the development. 

Samsung Heavy Industries previously worked with Pusan National University, DNV, and other companies to commercialize the hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system.
