South Korea's Samsung C&T Corp. said Friday it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Swedish energy company Karnfull Next AB to jointly enter the European small modular reactor (SMR) market.
The two companies plan to build an SMR power plant in Sweden by 2032 to supply electricity to local data centers.
Karnfull Next completed a preliminary site survey in the southeastern part of Sweden.
Samsung C&T will begin tasks, such as technology selection and environmental impact assessments.
The Swedish government plans to augment the country's nuclear energy capacity by at least 2,500 megawatts by 2035 in response to planned data center expansions by tech giants, such as Microsoft and Amazon.
