Samsung Display Co., South Korea’s top display producer, has developed the world's first QD-OLED, a self-emissive technology where light from a blue OLED passes through a QD (Quantum Dot) emitting layer to create colors.
This technology is optimized for large devices, offering fast response times, high color accuracy, near-infinite contrast ratios and wide viewing angles.
Amid growing demand for high refresh rate monitors with fast response times, especially in the gaming market, Samsung Display began mass production of QD-OLED monitor panels in 2022, leading the market for self-emissive monitors.
The company currently has a lineup of QD-OLED monitors in sizes 27 inches, 31.5 inches, 34 inches and 49 inches. These monitors feature top-tier specifications such as 4K resolution and a maximum refresh rate of 360 Hz.
So far, Samsung Display has collaborated with 10 global monitor brands to release over 90 models of QD-OLED monitors, many of which are gaming-oriented.
Samsung Display plans to expand its market beyond gaming monitors to include professional monitors, multimedia and entertainment monitors. Recently, the technology has also been adopted in "reference monitors," which require the highest level of technology for video editing.
The QD-OLED products have been well-received, increasing industry expectations for the self-emissive monitor market.
According to market research firm Omdia, the self-emissive monitor panel market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 12.3% to reach a market size of $1.08 billion by 2029, accounting for 10% of the overall monitor panel market.
As of the fourth quarter of last year, Samsung Display held a 79.7% market share in the self-emissive monitor panel market.
