POSCO DX develops AI-based roadkill prevention system

POSCO DX Co., the IT services subsidiary of South Korean steelmaker POSCO Holdings Inc. announced on Wednesday it developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based roadkill prevention system in collaboration with the Korea National Park Service under the Ministry of Environment.

This system involves the installation of LiDAR sensors and closed-circuit TV cameras along specific road sections to detect wild animals crossing the road. It not only detects the animals but can also identify the species, such as deer or cats, and relays this information to drivers passing through that monitored area using LED display boards.

The newly developed system was tested as a pilot project in an approximately 350-meter interval in the Sangju-Gumsan area within the Hallyeohaesang National Park after analyzing on-site conditions, including road environments.

Before full-scale implementation, POSCO DX used deep learning algorithms to analyze wildlife video data provided by the Korea National Park Service, thus optimizing the system for real-world conditions.

The system incorporates POSCO DX's proprietary Vision AI Solution, which is capable of recognizing actions captured in videos and automatically detecting and analyzing objects. This technology has applications beyond wildlife protection, including quality control and automatic cargo classification in a variety of industries.
