Samsung, UMich to research on Galaxy Watch’s fitness feature

The two compare and analyze maximum oxygen intake and sweat loss estimates with optimal standard data

Samsung Electronics Co. announced on Wednesday that it is conducting research in collaboration with the University of Michigan to enhance fitness features for the Galaxy Watch.

Both parties are comparing and analyzing optimal standard data with exercise-related metrics measured by the Galaxy Watch, such as maximum oxygen intake, calculated by dividing the amount of oxygen consumed during exercise by weight and exercise time, and sweat loss estimates, which indicate the amount of fluid lost during exercise.

Samsung Electronics explained that this study aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of the data measured by the Galaxy Watch. The company introduced personalized fitness management features, enhanced sleep monitoring, and health monitoring capabilities in the Galaxy Watch6 series unveiled in July.

"Through collaboration with the University of Michigan researchers who have exceptional expertise in the health and sports field, we expect to provide users with more accurate and personalized information," said Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung.
