Hyundai Glovis wins certification for lithium battery air transport

South Korea's logistics company Hyundai Glovis Co. has obtained international certification for specialized transportation, demonstrating its expertise in air transport.

The company announced on Tuesday that it has received the Center of Excellence for Independent Validators (CEIV) Lithium Batteries certification from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The certification, introduced by IATA in 2021, is an international standard certification that verifies the transportation expertise of companies in the lithium battery air logistics chain. The certification is issued after a verification process to ensure that the transportation and storage of lithium batteries, which require strict handling and transportation, comply with international standards and adhere to rigorous quality and safety management.

With the certification for lithium battery air transport, Hyundai Glovis plans to provide specialized air logistics services in the fast-growing electric vehicle battery market.

According to the global market research firm SNE Research, the global battery market is projected to grow eightfold over the next ten years, from $46.1 billion in 2020 to $351.7 billion in 2030, driven by the expansion of electric vehicle adoption.

Hyundai Glovis has been accelerating its related business expansion, including obtaining specialized patents in 2021. The patent applied by Hyundai Glovis is a platform container that can transport used batteries of various shapes and sizes in one container, adopting a variable rail-type structure that allows flexible adjustment of the container size to accommodate batteries from different vehicle models.

Currently, various pilot projects utilizing this container are under way in logistics fields both domestically and internationally, including Germany. Hyundai Glovis aims to provide differentiated logistics services throughout the battery life cycle, contribute to the establishment of a circular economy and support the development of the domestic battery industry.

"We will strive to enhance our company's value by securing additional growth momentum in new strategic businesses, such as battery logistics, in addition to generating stable profits based on our existing automotive logistics business," a Hyundai Glovis official said.
