South Korean aircraft engine maker and defense utility company Hanwha Aerospace Co. has signed on Monday a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Romanian state-run defense contractor ROMARM to enhance cooperation in the defense sector.
The agreement follows Hanwha's quick delivery of K9 self-propelled howitzers to Poland, which established the company's reputation for top-notch defense technology.
"The government will continue to support the strengthening of the defense industry's production capacity," said Romania's Minister of Economy Florin Spataru.
Under the terms of the MOU, the two companies will collaborate on the supply, use, and maintenance of Hanwha Aerospace weapons systems, such as the K9 self-propelled howitzers and the Redback infantry combat armored vehicle.
Romania, a member of NATO and neighbor to Ukraine, is pushing for military modernization while increasing its defense budget. The country has shown interest in acquiring Korean-made weapon systems whose performance has been proven, as it looks to replace older armored vehicles and towed howitzers.
"Based on the trust established with Poland last year, we will expand our business not only in Romania but also in Europe," said Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il.
Hanwha Aerospace has been supplying K9 howitzers to Poland since August last year after signing a deal to supply 212 K9 howitzers worth 3.2 trillion won ($2.5 billion).
