Seoul ranks 7th in city competitiveness assessed by Japanese Institute

Seoul's urban competitiveness rebounded after five years, ranking seventh in the world. It was due to the fact that the ranking of the economy category moved within the top 15, and the ranking of the livability category, which kept its competitiveness ranking low, rose slightly.

In the 2022 Global Power City Index (GPCI) announced on Sunday by the Mori Memorial Foundation’s Institute for Urban Strategies in Japan, Seoul ranked seventh, up one notch from last year.

Seoul had been in sixth place for six consecutive years until 2017, but its competitiveness has since 2018 declined and fallen to eighth.
London and New York ranked first and second, maintaining their lead for ten years. Tokyo and Paris have maintained the third and fourth spots for six straight years, and Singapore has been in fifth place since 2011.

Among cities in Asia, Shanghai (10th), Dubai (11th), Hong Kong (23rd), Taipei (36th), Osaka (37th), and Bangkok (40th) were on the list.
The city competitiveness ranking has been released every year since 2008 by the Mori Memorial Foundation.

The competitiveness of 48 major cities across the world is assessed with 70 indicators in six categories: economy, research and development, cultural interaction, livability, the environment, and accessibility.
