South Korea's heavy industry company Doosan Enerbility Co. on Monday said it is Korea's first to receive international certification for an eight-megawatt offshore wind power system from DEWI-OCC, a global certification institution based in Germany.
Since 2018, Doosan Enerbility has promoted the development of such a system with support from the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
DS205-8MW is customized for the environment of the southern part of the Yellow Sea, a domestic region where wind speed is slower than in European countries, where offshore wind power is more developed. The diameter of the rotor was widened to 205 meters with a blade length of 100 meters for a utilization rate of over 30% even at an average wind speed of 6.5 meters per second.
The blade was jointly developed by Doosan Enerbility, Korea Institute of Materials Science and the blade's manufacturer Human Composites.
Doosan Enerbility can obtain international certification only after passing all design and manufacturing evaluations and type testing.
Park Hong-ook, head of Doosan Enerbility's Power Services Business Group, said, "We will further boost the localization rate of turbine parts, which is over 70%, and contribute to energizing the domestic ecosystem for offshore wind power by replacing foreign-dependent turbine maintenance services with domestic technology and personnel."
