South Korean company LIG Nex1 will develop technology for ultra-miniature sensors that can be mounted on unmanned submarines.

The company announced on Wednesday that it won an order to develop a technology for super-compact linear array sensors from the state-run Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement (KRIT).

LIG Nex1 plans to utilize its expertise in developing sensors for port surveillance systems for advanced compact sensors.

If the super-compact linear array sensors are adopted on unmanned submarines or next-generation submarines, our navy's underwater ability to detect enemy submarines as well as survivability and anti-submarine combat capability will improve significantly, an LIG Nex1 official said.

Unmanned submersibles are a major weapon system that can perform surveillance and reconnaissance missions in border areas or in threatened areas where enemy underwater submarines or submersibles frequently appear.

The miniaturized and lightweight precision sensor technology is considered one of the main technologies to improve the combat capability of unmanned submarines.
