Nongshim Co., a South Korean food and instant noodle manufacturer, announced on Wednesday that it is slated to export a smart farm system to Oman, a country located on the Arabian Peninsula.
This is the first such achievement for Nongshim since 2018 when the company launched a dedicated in-house startup team to focus on the smart farm business.
The Omani government has decided to buy two such containers by Nongshim valued at $200,000; with each box being 40 ft in length.
The containers will provide a total of 165 square meters of cultivation area.
The boxes contain built-in systems that can automatically adjust the environment of the containers, including oxygen levels, amount of light, temperature, and more.
The company added that those monitoring the containers can check and control what goes on inside through a smartphone app. The materials that the boxes are made of as well as the software used are independently developed by Nongshim.
“Using the containers, it is possible to harvest at least 12 times and up to 18 times a year,” a Nongshim employee said. “When compared to the ordinary farming environment, the use of smart farm cuts down the cultivation period by half or more.”
Beginning with Oman, Nongshim plans to provide smart farm containers and technology throughout the Middle East.
