Hyundai Mobis Co., the world’s sixth-largest automotive supplier, has developed technology for the first time in the industry to allow drivers to control a display for in-vehicle infotainment with gestures as it aims to meet various demands from global carmakers.

Hyundai Mobis, a car components maker within South Korea’s largest automaker Hyundai Motor Group, on Thursday showcased its Quick Menu Selection, the world's first proximity detection pop-up display.

The technology, dubbed Menu Pre Information, applies proximity sensors, which can detect the presence of nearby objects without any physical contact, to displays in vehicles to allow drivers to easily select frequently used functions with minimal operations of touchscreens. A driver will be able to find a function they want with gestures and select it with just one touch.

“Hyundai Mobis developed the technology to enhance drivers’ convenience and safety,” the company said in a statement, adding the Quick Menu Selection is expected to help users concentrate on driving.

The company has been improving its competitiveness in in-vehicle infotainment by developing hardware capabilities that guarantee efficient and stable operations based on software flexible enough to meet various requirements in the automobile industry.

Last month, Hyundai Mobis showcased a new in-vehicle infotainment platform jointly developed with Swiss technology company Luxoft.

The new platform, dubbed Mobis Infotainment System (MIS), can fully control six displays – the digital cluster, augmented reality heads-up display (AR-HUD), center stack display and three displays for passenger seats.

Hyundai Mobis aims to further enhance competitiveness in the world’s automotive industry through technology developments and upgrades, as well as software cooperation with global carmakers.
