LG Electronics Inc. will unveil the world’s largest 97-inch organic light-emitting diode TV at the upcoming electronics show in Germany, a move aimed at consolidating its leadership in the large-size premium segment.

The South Korean electronics company said on Monday it will showcase the LG OLED evo Gallery Edition, model 97G2, at IFA 2022 to be held in Messe, Berlin from Sept. 2 for a five-day run.

LG said it plans to ship the latest model to the global market during the fourth quarter, a high season for the sale of consumer electronics and home appliances. It didn’t provide specific launch dates.

With the latest evo Gallery Edition, LG said it will complete the full lineup of its OLED TVs from the world’s smallest 42-inch model to the largest 97-inch TV.

In the 70-inch and larger-size segment, LG will have 10 models by the end of this year from seven in 2021.

According to market tracker Omdia, the global TV market for the 70-inch and larger-size segment has been growing at an average annual rate of 17% since 2020. The market is forecast to reach 14.9 million units by this year’s end and 17.1 million by the end of 2023.

LG is the world’s largest manufacturer of OLED TVs with a market share of over 60%, although crosstown rival Samsung Electronics Co. is the dominant player in the overall TV market.

LG’s ALPHA 9 PROCESSOR

LG said its fifth-generation processor Alpha 9 will power the 97-inch LG OLED evo Gallery Edition TV to deliver lifelike images and an immersive, cinematic viewing experience.

At IFA 2022, LG will also showcase its premium liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs dubbed QNED TVs.

LG plans to expand its 75-inch and 86-inch QNED TV lineup to 10 models by the end of this year from five last year.

OLED is highlighted by self-illuminating pixels that do not require a separate light source, allowing manufacturers to produce lightweight, thin and flexible display products, appealing to high-end consumers.

Demand for OLED TVs that offer stunning picture quality has been growing rapidly as consumers, including gamers, are being attracted to large-size LED TVs as big-screen gaming gains popularity.

According to Omdia, OLED TVs will account for 55% of the European premium TV market this year and 66% by the end of 2023.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics said it will unveil its newest virtual avatar G∙NUSMAS at IFA 2022.

G∙NUSMAS, whose name is derived from SAMSUNG spelled backward, is a whimsical and brilliant alien that connects various aspects of Samsung to young people, particularly millennials and Generation Z consumers.

Lee Jae-seung, head of Samsung’s home appliance business division, said the company plans to apply Wi-Fi wireless technology to all its home appliances by the end of next year to reduce energy consumption.

Samsung will also cooperate with solar power generating companies such as Hanwha QCELLS to help households produce energy at home as part of the global initiative to cut carbon emissions, he said.
