South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility Co. secured a $640 million deal for a desalination plant in Saudi Arabia to meet water demand in the kingdom.

Doosan Enerbility, the world’s top desalination plant company, said on Wednesday it has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project with Shuaibah Three Water Desalination Company, a special purpose vehicle set up by ACWA Power.

Doosan Enerbility, formerly known as Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., has worked on two desalination projects for ACWA Power, the largest private power generation and desalinated water production company in the Middle East, in 2006 and 2007.

The latest project is to build a reverse osmosis desalination facility with a daily capacity of 600,000 tons of drinkable water for 2 million people in Shuaibah, 110 kilometers south of Jeddah, Saudi’s second largest city. Doosan Enerbility also plans to establish a 60-megawatt solar power plant to provide electricity to the desalination plant.

The company is scheduled to start construction on Sept. 20, 2022, with a target of completion on May 20, 2025.

“We will actively target Saudi Arabia with proven technology as the kingdom orders one to three desalination plants a year,” said a Doosan Enerbility official.
