Hyundai Motor Co.’s all-electric IONIQ 5 crossover beat two competing models from Volkswagen and Swedish carmaker Polestar in a comparative assessment by Germany’s leading automotive trade magazine, the South Korean carmaker said on Sunday.

The IONIQ 5 won the highest total scores for seven items ranging from performance to safety and efficiency ahead of Volkswagen’s ID.5 and Polestar 2, according to Auto Motor und Sport.

Hyundai’s EV received 617 in total, higher than 588 for Polster 2 and 586 for Volkswagen’s ID.5 among the three models reviewed by the German magazine.

In particular, the IONIQ 5 racked up the highest score of 132 in terms of efficiency, which compares the purchase price, residual value, maintenance costs and fuel consumption.

"It is meaningful that IONIQ 5 was ahead of the electric-SUV coupé from Volkswagen, which recently hit the European market, by big margins," a Hyundai official said.

The IONIQ 5 is the first model of Hyundai’s dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) lineup.

It boasts 800-volt, ultra-fast charging capabilities with an 80% charge from empty possible in just 18 minutes.

Earlier this year, the eco-friendly model was named the World Car of the Year following a series of industry accolades.
