Samsung Elec. proposes global research for 6G frequencies

The South Korean tech giant forecasts it may take about 10 years to discover and commercialize 6G candidate frequency bands

Samsung Electronics Co., South Korea’s tech behemoth, has put forward global research on 6G service frequencies as it aims to take the lead in the next-generation telecommunications sector.

Samsung on Sunday released a white paper on the 6G communication system, a key infrastructure for the commercialization of future technologies such as holograms, the metaverse and extended reality (XR).

The country’s leading network systems company emphasized the importance of securing 6G frequencies that are expected to expand mobile communication service coverage to 10 kilometers above ground at a 50-times faster speed than current levels.

It may take about a decade to discover and commercialize candidate frequency bands for ultra-high-speed and large-capacity services, Samsung predicted.

“We will need continuous ultra-wide bandwidth frequencies from hundreds of megahertz (MHz) to tens of gigahertz (GHz),” Samsung said in the white paper. “We should consider all possible bands.”

Samsung decided to make a large investment in 6G as a future growth engine along with system chips, bio, artificial intelligence and robots.

“Communication is an infrastructure as important as vaccines,” Samsung Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee told South Korean President Moon Jae-in late last year. “We are preparing for 6G, and we should invest in advance for use when needed.”
