Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s top automaker, aims to sell half of the cars in the US with eco-friendly models by 2030, increasing sales of electric vehicles in the world’s second-largest auto market.
Jose Munoz, Hyundai’s chief operating officer and head of its US and North America business, said the carmaker was ready to raise the product mix of eco-friendly cars in total US sales to 40-50% from the current 10% by then.
“A big trend in the US market is the electrification. So, we put a specific focus,” Muniz told g group of South Korean reporters on Jan. 5 on the sidelines of the Consumer Electrics Show 2022 in Las Vegas.
“We are really well equipped. We are really getting ready to support the 40 to 50% mix of battery EV sales in the US market by 2030.”
Hyundai’s EV sales in the US soared more than 130% in 2021, he said.
ELECTRIC VERSION OF GENESIS GV70
Munoz reiterated Hyundai’s EV production plan in the US.
In May 2021, Hyundai Motor Group announced that it will invest $7.4 billion in the areas of EVs, hydrogen vehicles, urban air mobility (UAM), robotics, autonomous driving as well as enhancement of its existing production facilities in the US.
“We are working on developing concrete plans… What I can confirm to you right now is that we will produce EVs in the US without a doubt,” he said.
Hyundai was known to plan to manufacture models including an electric version of the Genesis GV70.

The company plans to invest in charging infrastructures, Munoz said.
It will authorize only dealers with charging infrastructures to sell the all-electric IONIQ 5 in the US, he said.
