Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Display Co., the two archrivals in the TV panel market, are unveiling new displays with enhanced picture and sound quality this week to better support dynamic games, or be used as a smart window.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2022 to be held on Jan. 5-8 in Las Vegas, Samsung will showcase new monitors primarily for its two flagship models: Micro LED and Neo QLED. By comparison, LG Display's lineup of new products will be focused on OLED panels.

Both Micro LED and OLED set them apart from other displays with self-illuminating pixels, alongside improved picture quality.

For Micro LED TVs, Samsung will introduce new models in three different sizes – 110, 101 and 89 inches -- which indicate the screen's diagonal sizes. Micro LED is a panel technology that uses millions of self-emitting pixels, meaning they emit their own light rather than using a backlight.

"The 2022 screens bring the vision of ‘Screens Everywhere, Screens for All’ closer to reality with life-like images, immersive sound and hyper-personalized experiences," Samsung said in a statement released on Jan. 3.

For the Neo QLED TV, Samsung adopted the new shape adaptive light technology that enhances the brightness and accuracy of all shapes on the screen. Its 2022 Neo QLED also features real depth enhancer, a multi-intelligence picture quality algorithm.

"This technological advancement creates a greater sense of realism by determining and processing an object on the screen against its background to create a sense of depth," Samsung said.

Additionally, Samsung’s 2022 Neo QLED features eyecomfort mode, which automatically adjusts the screen’s brightness and tone based on a built-in light sensor and sunset/sunrise information.

LG Display will exhibit the next-generation OLED panel dubbed OLED.EX (Evolution/eXperience), as well as transparent OLED panel.

The OLED.EX is 30% brighter than conventional OLED displays and boasts improved color accuracy. By using deuterium, which is heavier than hydrogen, the general structure of the new panel can be more stable.

Moreover, the company has developed transparent OLED solutions to further seamlessly bridge the gap between online and physical spaces.

"Leveraging the advantages of OLED's self-emissive nature, the company's transparent OLED boasts high transparency enough to replace regular glasses," it said in a statement on Monday.

The screens also can display graphic effects and information such as subway schedules and maps in subway stations or shopping malls.

GAMING MONITORS

At the world's biggest tech expo, the two South Korean companies will show off their cutting-edge technology for gaming TVs as well.

Samsung is unveiling a gaming monitor for its 2022 Neo QLED lineup that supports the new HDR10+ GAMING standard, a games-focused version of HDR10, a video standard.

The 2022 models come with advanced sound technology that provides immersive and multi-dimensional sound. It enables the soundbar and TV speakers to work together with all the speakers on the QLED TVs.

LG's gaming OLED boats 10 times faster response speed than LCD gaming monitors, as well as brighter picture quality, according to the company statement.

Its gaming OLED also provides an even higher level of eye comfort for long gaming sessions without the sore and fatigued eyes during and afterwards.

“The role of the screen has changed dramatically in recent years with advancements in technology and how entertainment is distributed," said Simon Sung, head of sales at Samsung's visual display business.

"With our new lineup of products, we are providing customers an entirely immersive video and audio experience that is customizable to their needs.”
