LG Display Co. revealed a 30% brighter OLED panel during Wednesday’s press event.

During the media event held in Seoul’s LG Science Park, the company said it will begin the mass production of the next-generation OLED panel dubbed OLED EX (Evolution/eXperience) in the second quarter of 2022.

“We developed new technology that uses deuterium after four years of research and development,” Oh Chang-ho, the company’s Vice President said. “Only one out of some 6,000 hydrogen atoms is deuterium so it was challenging to acquire the raw materials.”

Oh added the panel maker has secured enough deuterium for mass production of the new OLED EX, which uses deuterium compounds to allow the light-emitting diodes to emit stronger light.

BRIGHTER & MORE FLEXIBLE

The deuterium-based technology increases a panel's brightness by 30% compared to existing OLED panels. By using deuterium, which is heavier than hydrogen, the general structure of the panel can be more stable.

The new product boasts improved color accuracy as well, thanks to an algorithm based on machine learning technology, which “precisely controls the display's energy input to more accurately express the details and colors of the video content being played,” according to the company.

Not only that, OLED EX takes advantage of OLED panels’ flexibility. You can watch something on a flat screen and turn it into a rounded screen to watch sports -- all with a click of a button.

INCREASED DEMAND

OLED EX, produced in Paju, Gyeonggi Province in Korea and Guangzhou, Guangdong Province in China, will replace existing OLED panels made by LG Display.

LG Display forecasts annual shipments of its OLED panels to increase from this year’s 8 million to 10 million in the new year.

An employee with the display leader said the company hopes to continue new form factors by utilizing its nine years of research and development in the display sector. In particular, stretchable displays are in development.
