The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) has named Suyi Kim, its Asia head, as the global chief of its private equity business, effective Sept. 15.

Most recently, the South Korean served as senior managing director and head of Asia Pacific, responsible for leading CPPIB’s activities in the region and overseeing its portfolio of investments in Asia.

John Graham, chief executive of the Canadian pension fund, on Thursday announced the appointment of Kim as senior managing director and global head of equity.

Kim will lead a team that makes private equity investments globally, both directly and with partners, CPPIB said in a statement. The global PE team had C$125.1 billion ($100.6 billion) in assets under management at the end of March.

Her appointment as CPPIB’s global PE boss marks the first time that a Korean national has assumed a senior management post at a global pension fund other than Korea’s National Pension Service (NPS).

“Suyi’s background in private equity, extensive experience leading our Asia Pacific business and deep knowledge of the organization makes her ideally suited for this role, and demonstrates the depth of our leadership team," Graham said in the statement.

“I am confident that with her global expertise, Suyi will build on the success of a strong and experienced PE team to continue to deliver solid long-term results for CPP contributors and beneficiaries."

CPPIB, with $398 billion in assets under management, is one of the world’s top 10 pension funds. Headquartered in Toronto, the pension scheme runs operations globally, including in Hong Kong, London, Luxemburg, Mumbai, New York and San Francisco.

Known for its aggressive investment in alternative assets such as property, the fund has delivered a 10% annual return on investment, on average, over the past decade.

The Canadian pension fund is also active in Korea, participating in management buyout deals through investments in Korean private equity firms such as MBK Partners and KKR.

Majored in economics at Seoul National University, Kim also studied at Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

She joined CPPIB in 2007 after gaining global private equity experience at Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and the Carlyle Group. She also worked at McKinsey & Co. in various Asian countries and at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Kim opened the Canadian pension fund’s Hong Kong office in 2008 and launched and led CPP Investments’ PE business in Asia before taking on her current role.
