South Korean media company CJ ENM Co. is using Samsung Electronics Co.’s new commercial displays for a virtual production studio to spearhead the production of future video content.

CJ ENM is installing the Wall, Samsung’s state-of-the-art display technology, in the virtual studio, a part of its television and film production studio complex scheduled to open later this year, CJ ENM said on July 26. The main display will be installed in an oval shape with a diameter of 20 meters and a height of seven meters or more, creating a seemingly endless backdrop to capture content.

This virtual production studio will use LED displays and connected cameras to create virtual settings in real-time. This solution will save time and reduce image compositing and on-location production costs while helping filmmakers to see the camera on the live-action set in any direction.

The displays allow special visual effects from the filming stage. Filmmakers do not need to use the chroma key technique in which an actor or an actress performs in front of a green screen and then apply computer graphics separately. It is possible to shoot with the virtual world floating on the LED screen instead of synthesizing the actors and the virtual world background separately.

Once the studio is completed, CJ ENM can cut production costs significantly as they do not need to spend money for large sets and overseas trips for filming.

CJ ENM plans to converge contents from the studio with various new technologies such as metaverse and extended reality (XR) performances in the future.
