Hyundai Rotem won a $296.5 million electric train deal from Tanzania as the South Korean railway system maker aims to expand business in Africa.

Hyundai Rotem, whose top shareholder is Hyundai Motor Co., said it will deliver 80 electric multiple units and 17 electric locomotives by 2024 to Tanzania Railway Corp. (TRC), according to a company statement on July 6. The trains will run on a 546 km-route connecting Dar es Salam and Makutopora, the first and second stages of the standard gauge railway project under construction in Tanzania. It is the first electric-powered eco-friendly train in the country where only diesel trains are used.

Tanzania is developing railway infrastructure with $7 billion investment to build 1,219 km of international standard track with width of 1,435 mm over five stages.

Trains in the country can run at only 30-40 km per hour as many of tracks are narrower than the global standard. Once the project is completed, the speed will improve to up to 160 km a hour, enhancing traffic convenience and cargo transportation.

Hyundai Rotem aims to preoccupy the country’s market with the deal and win more orders since the project will be carried out in five stages.

“With the high-quality train delivery, we will do utmost to secure more deals,” said a company official.

Hyundai Rotem has been active in Africa. Last month, it won a deal to upgrade a railway signal system in Egypt. It also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in April with the Egyptian government on sale of 840 electric multiple units.
