Hyundai Construction Equipment Co. (Hyundai CE), an affiliate of Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings Co., said on May 17 that it has jointly developed South Korea’s first AI-based equipment failure diagnosis technology together with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

“The new technology enables us to equip an AIoT module on excavators, one that combines AI technology with Internet of Things (IoT). The module can accurately point out equipment failures by collecting and analyzing real-time data,” said a Hyundai CE spokesman.

Hyundai CE’s CEO Kong Ki-young added that the company will continue to strengthen its AI capabilities to become a total solutions provider in the construction industry by 2025.

The AIoT technology, according to the company, allows the construction equipment such as the excavator to self-identify failures and at the same time recommend equipment parts for repair. The new technology allows engineers to deal with the failures remotely, Hyundai CE said.

Hyundai CE and AWS started to develop the AI-based smart diagnosis technology in January this year and delivered its first semi-autonomous machine control excavator to the client in February.

Earlier this month on May 11, at a conference with South Korea’s market analysts, Hyundai CE officially announced its long-term vision, Technology Innovation 2025, which aims to strengthen the company’s profile as a construction and logistics solutions provider with an AI focus.

To this end, the company said that it will further expand collaborative efforts with both domestic companies such as the telecom giant KT Corp. as well as international AI leaders including AWS.
