South Korea’s LG Group will spend about 120 billion won ($106 million) over the next three years to establish a massive high-performance computing infrastructure for advanced artificial intelligence (AI).

LG, the country’s fourth-largest conglomerate, said on May 17 that its research arm, LG AI Research, will develop a hyper-scale AI system that can conduct comprehensive and independent learning and decision-making by processing huge amounts of data just like the human brain.

The infrastructure will enable 95.7 quadrillion calculations per second, it said.

In the second half of this year, LG said it will unveil its hyper-scale AI system with 600 billion machine learning parameters, more than triple that of GPT-3, currently the world's largest autoregressive language model unveiled by US-based AI research laboratory OpenAI in May 2020.

Parameters play a similar role as synapses in the human brain that connect neurons to learn and memorize information. More parameters mean better AI intelligence.

While GPT-3 can produce essays and novels, as well as human-like conversation, LG said its advanced AI system will not only be able to learn languages, but also understand images and videos with enhanced data inference capabilities.

LG AI Research, joined by 16 group affiliates, including LG Electronics Inc., also aims to develop an AI model with trillion-scale parameters by the first half of 2022.

APPLICATION TO VARIOUS BUSINESS AREAS

LG Group said its advanced AI system will be applied to various business areas ranging from enhanced customer services and new product development to sales activities related to business-to-business customers.

The group, which also owns the country's top chemical firm LG Chem Ltd., plans to utilize its AI system to find new materials in the field of next-generation batteries and light-emitting compounds.

It expects the hyper-scale AI model to analyze massive volumes of chemical studies and patents and set up a comprehensive database for new materials, which can lead to the development of improved electric vehicle batteries and highly efficient TV displays.

The group said its AI infrastructure can also be applied to the development of cancer treatment and vaccines using the human immune system.

“We aim to establish a state-of-the-art open AI ecosystem jointly with global partners to improve living conditions for humanity,” said Bae Kyung-hoon, head of LG AI Research.

LG’s AI project is part of the group’s efforts initiated by Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo to pursue digital transformation.
