South Korea’s SK Hynix Inc. has begun the mass production of its latest high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) amid intensifying competition among chipmakers for high-capacity storage devices.

SK Hynix said on Apr. 15 that it has begun producing in large quantities its latest SSD model for corporate use, PE8110 E1.S, based on the company’s 128-layer NAND flash memory.

The company said the new product improves the read latency by 88% and the write speed by 83% than its predecessor, PE6110. The new SSD with a storage capacity of up to 8-gigabyte (GB) can save a full-HD 4 GB movie in just a second, according to SK Hynix.

“With the latest model, we now have a full lineup of SSD products to meet various consumer needs around the world,” the company said in a statement.

For improved customer satisfaction, the company said it offers a five-year product guarantee for the SSD model, compared to a three-year guarantee for previous products.

HEATED COMPETITION FOR ADVANCED SSDs

Chipmakers are competitively unveiling new SSDs to grab a greater share of the growing market amid the stay-at-home work environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In January, Samsung Electronics Co. said it’s launching its latest 870 EVO series for individual consumers.

Based on the third-generation SATA interface, Samsung said the 870 EVO uses TLC flash memory and is one of the fastest drives, touching 560 MB per second for reads and 530 MB per second for writes, thus more suitable for video game consoles such as Sony’s PlayStation 5.

According to market research firm International Data Corp. (IDC), the global corporate SSD market is forecast to rise at an average annual rate of 21.5% to 28 trillion won ($25 billion) in 2024 from 2020.

SSDs have emerged as one of South Korea’s key export items on the growing demand for PCs and other electronic devices amid the pandemic.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the country’s SSD exports more than doubled to $10.06 billion in 2020 from $4.99 billion in 2019.
